Effects of Haloperidol on Distribution of Lithium Ion in Lithium Carbonate Treated Albino Rat

Abstract
Group of albino rats treated by lithium carbonate alone and another group of albino rats by lithium carbonate and haloperidol were studied for the distribution of lithium ion in the liver, kidney, brain (cerebrum), muscle tissues, plasma and erythrocytes.
The results are as follow.
1. When low dose of lithium (ImEq/kg body weight/day) was administered, no significant difference in the lithium distribution was found between the two groups.
2. When high dose of lithium (5mEq/kg body weight/day) was administered, higher lithium ion distribution was noted in the group of combined treatment; Increments in the combined treatment groups compared to the single medication- group were 14.5% in plasma, 35.4% in RBCS, 44.9% in cerebral tissue and 17.6% in kidney tissue.
3. The author suggested from these results to excercise more attentive scrutiny in deciding drug dosage when combining lithium carbonate and haloperidol.
